THE REPORT IN 3 POINTS
- 01Tesla's $1.53 billion free cash flow turns to roughly -$3.7 billion once $5.2 billion of unpaid bills and prepayments is stripped out.
- 02GAAP operating income fell 56% to $718 million and margin hit 2.6%, while the non-GAAP $0.48 beat rested on $1.17 billion of stock pay.
- 03FPI fair value is $261.30 against a $386.47 price, with Tesla at 380.7x earnings versus an auto industry median of 13.2x.
A 3-cent beat and a 56% profit drop in the same quarter
Tesla ($TSLA) reported revenue of $28.05 billion for the quarter to September 2026, flat against $28.09 billion in the quarter to September 2025 and in line with the $28.06 billion consensus. Non-GAAP earnings of $0.48 a share beat the $0.45 estimate.
The Q3 2026 update filed with the SEC tells a different story. GAAP operating income fell 56% to $718 million and operating margin shrank to 2.6% from 5.8%. GAAP earnings were $0.22 a share, down from $0.39. The gap to the non-GAAP figure is almost entirely stock-based compensation of $1.17 billion, worth $0.28 a share after tax - pay that shareholders fund through dilution, not cash.
Automotive margin excluding regulatory credits reached 18.1%, up from 16.3% in the quarter to June 2026 but below the 19.2% of the quarter to March 2026. Credit revenue fell to $113 million from $417 million, deliveries slipped 2% to 486,532, and energy revenue dropped 16% to $2.88 billion.

$5.2 billion of other people's money inside $6.3 billion of operating cash flow
Operating cash flow of $6.26 billion was the strongest number of the quarter, and the cash flow statement shows where it came from: accounts payable and accrued liabilities rose by $3.99 billion and deferred revenue by $1.26 billion. Tesla paid suppliers more slowly and took cash for products not yet delivered - a household looks flush too when the credit-card bill has not cleared.
Without those two items, operating cash flow was about $1.0 billion against capital spending of $4.73 billion - free cash flow of roughly -$3.7 billion instead of the reported +$1.53 billion. Swings of this size tend to reverse. Free cash flow over the four quarters to 30 September 2026 fell to $3.30 billion from $7.00 billion over the four quarters to 31 March 2026, while trailing capex climbed to $15.4 billion.
On the 21 October 2026 call management cut the 2026 capex plan to about $20 billion from more than $25 billion; nine-month spending of $13.0 billion implies roughly $7 billion in the December quarter. On 29 September 2026 the company signed $30 billion of credit facilities - a $20 billion three-year term loan and two revolvers of $8 billion and $2 billion - with no draws planned in 2026. Cash stands at $45.4 billion, but the free cash flow yield on a $1.45 trillion market value is 0.40%, against 5.96% for the median Consumer Cyclical stock.
Why the model stops at $261.30 when the stock is at $386.47
The FPI fair value is $261.30. At $386.47 the stock trades 32.4% above it, the verdict is overvalued and the FPI score is 36 out of 100. Half of the blended model is a discounted cash flow, and a DCF is anchored to the cash a business throws off today: a free cash flow yield of 0.40%, a return on invested capital of 2.8% and a net margin of 3.7% keep any DCF low.
The peer third adds the second anchor. Tesla trades at 380.7x trailing earnings and 120.4x EV/EBITDA (company value over operating profit before depreciation), against medians of 13.2x and 9.2x for auto manufacturers - 29 times and 13 times the industry multiple. At 381 times earnings a buyer pays for 381 years of current profit, and three-year revenue growth is 5.2% a year. Only the consensus fifth, at $440.93, pulls the number up. The P/E was 34.0x at $123.18 at the end of 2022 and 418.2x at $449.72 at the end of 2025 - above 190 times at every year-end since 2024.
Over the 120 days to October 22, 2026 the share price went from $375.53 to $374.58 (−0.3%) and the FPI fair value from $266.63 to $261.30 (−2.0%). The gap moved from 29.0% above fair value to 30.2% above.
Street vs model: $441 against $261, a 69% disagreement about 2027
Wall Street is nearly split - 34 buy, 33 hold, 15 sell - yet the consensus label is buy. The mean target of $440.93 sits 14% above the price and 69% above the FPI fair value; the median is $435. The range runs from $157 at HSBC on 5 October 2026 to $840 at Morgan Stanley on 12 September 2026, so the high is 5.4 times the low. The two targets issued in the month to 22 October average $274, within 5% of the model, while the 15 issued in the quarter average $441.60. Barclays upgraded to Outperform on 19 October 2026; Citi stayed Neutral on 21 October.
The gap has a date attached: 2027. On the call management put the first customer activation of unsupervised FSD in the second quarter of 2027, Optimus deliveries to outside companies at the end of 2027 and robotaxi revenue becoming noticeable from the second quarter of 2027. None of that is in the $3.30 billion of trailing free cash flow, and all of it is in a $435 target. The second layer arrived on 20 October 2026, when Tesla and SpaceX formed special committees to explore a merger that would need approval from 50% of Tesla shareholders and would pair a company valued above $2 trillion with one valued near $1.5 trillion.
34 buy · 33 hold · 15 sell. FPI fair value sits inside the Street range, the share price is inside the range.
Three numbers to watch before 27 January 2027
The stock closed on 21 October 2026 within 47 cents of its 200-day average of $386.94, then slipped to $377.88 after hours. Below sit the 52-week low of $297.38 and the $261.30 fair value. Insiders made 66 sales worth $87.7 million and no purchases in the 12 months to October 2026.
- Automotive margin excluding credits above 19.2% in the December quarter would show the March 2026 level is repeatable without credit income. A print below 18.1% says the opposite.
- Free cash flow positive without payables help. Payables and accrued liabilities reached $34.4 billion at 30 September 2026, up from $30.6 billion at 30 June. If that balance falls while capex runs near $7 billion, the December quarter shows an outflow and the $30 billion of facilities becomes the 2027 funding story.
- GAAP earnings against $0.22. Consensus for the quarter to December 2026, due on 27 January 2027, is $0.50 non-GAAP on revenue of $28.57 billion. A robotaxi revenue line in the 10-K or unsupervised FSD before June 2027 moves the trailing cash the DCF reads; a merger vote moves the share count.
HIGHEST WALL STREET TARGET
- 01Morgan Stanley's $840 target from 12 September 2026 needs the 2027 story to land: unsupervised FSD activation in Q2 2027 and Optimus deliveries by end-2027.
- 02Automotive margin excluding credits recovered to 18.1% from 16.3% in the June 2026 quarter, and a December print above 19.2% would show pricing power without credit income.
- 03A balance sheet with $45.4 billion of cash, debt/equity of 0.11x and $30 billion of facilities signed 29 September 2026 funds the robotaxi build without equity issuance.
BOTTOM OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND
- 01Accounts payable rose $3.99 billion and deferred revenue $1.26 billion, so stripping both turns the reported $1.53 billion free cash flow into roughly -$3.7 billion.
- 02GAAP operating income fell 56% to $718 million and margin to 2.6%, with ROIC of 2.8% and net margin of 3.7% leaving the DCF half of the model little to discount.
- 03At 380.7x earnings and 120.4x EV/EBITDA against industry medians of 13.2x and 9.2x, a reset toward peer multiples on 5.2% three-year revenue growth is severe.
FPI FAIR VALUE $261.30 · FPI fair value of $261.30 sits far nearer the $130.65 bear anchor than the $840.00 bull anchor, because trailing free cash flow of $3.30 billion yields just 0.40% on a $1.45 trillion market value.
