FORD · F · OCT 30, 2026 · AFTER RESULTS OF OCT 28, 2026

Ford says 2027 will look like 2026. Who pays $15.50 for a flat year?

Ford beat by $0.08 a share and lifted its 2026 profit floor, then told investors 2027 will be flat. Wall Street's median target needs a 26% climb from here; the FPI model says the stock should fall 30%. Both cannot be right.

THE REPORT IN 3 POINTS

  • 01Ford beat with $0.49 adjusted EPS in the September 2026 quarter and raised its 2026 EBIT floor to $10.5 billion.
  • 02Management guided 2027 profit roughly flat with 2026, citing about $2 billion of commodity, chip and logistics costs.
  • 03FPI fair value is $8.58, 30.5% below the $12.34 price, while Wall Street's median target is $15.50.

The beat was $0.08 a share. The outlook for 2027 was zero

Ford $F earned an adjusted $0.49 a share in the quarter to September 2026 against the $0.41 analysts expected, on revenue of $49.5 billion, down 2% from the same quarter of 2025. Adjusted EBIT - operating profit before interest and tax, one-offs stripped out - came to $2.7 billion, up 3%. The stock closed at $12.36 on 29 October 2026, up 3.4%.

The raise was modest: the low end of 2026 adjusted EBIT guidance moved from $10 billion to $10.5 billion, the top stayed at $11 billion. Inside it, Ford Blue (petrol and hybrid) rose to about $5.5 billion, Ford Pro (commercial vehicles) fell to about $7 billion, and Model e (EVs) still loses about $4 billion.

The number that did not make the headline came from the call. Management put 2027 profit roughly in line with 2026, citing about $2 billion of commodity, memory-chip and logistics headwinds, higher Model e spending before the late-2027 launch of the sub-$30,000 Fathom EV, and no step up in EV profitability until 2028. The third-quarter adjusted EBIT margin was 5.4%; the target is 8% by 2029. That is a 15-month flat patch for a stock Wall Street wants up 26%.

Ford beat the EPS estimate in 6 of the last 7 quarters. Price reaction is the move on the trading day after the results.

$4.7 billion of cash in one quarter, $4.9 billion in nine months

Adjusted free cash flow - the cash left after running the plants and paying for new ones - was a use of $1.9 billion in the quarter to March 2026, then $2.1 billion in the quarter to June and $4.7 billion in the quarter to September. One quarter produced 96% of the nine-month total of $4.9 billion. Unchanged full-year guidance of $6-7 billion implies only $1.1-2.1 billion in the quarter to December 2026.

Ford ended September with $25.3 billion in cash and $46.4 billion in liquidity. The $0.60 annual dividend - a 4.86% yield at $12.34 - costs roughly $2.4 billion a year, covered more than twice by the low end of that range.

The lumpiness matters for the valuation. A trailing free cash flow yield of 14.79% against an industry median of 0.21% looks like a bargain, but it rests on one quarter in which working capital swung Ford's way. A car maker's cash flow is a harvest, not a salary, and the guide to valuing cyclical stocks explains why a peak quarter gets discounted.

Over the 120 days to October 30, 2026 the share price went from $13.35 to $12.23 (−8.4%) and the FPI fair value from $9.84 to $8.58 (−12.8%). The gap moved from 26.3% above fair value to 29.8% above.

Why $8.58: a P/S of 0.3x says cheap, a net margin of -3.9% says no

The FPI fair value is $8.58. At $12.34 the stock trades 30.5% above it, and the FPI score is 34 out of 100. The cause is specific: the trailing twelve months still contain the quarter to December 2025, when Ford booked most of its $8.2 billion net loss for 2025. Nine-month 2025 net income was $2.9 billion, so that single quarter carried a loss of about $11.1 billion, and the $3.3 billion earned in the first nine months of 2026 does not offset it.

That one quarter drives the metrics a long-term model reads: net margin -3.9% against an industry median of 3.0%, return on equity -18.9% against 6.6%, return on invested capital 1.0% against 2.5%, debt to equity 4.57x. Negative earnings also knock the P/E and EV/EBITDA legs out of the peer comparison - both show as n/a - leaving a P/S of 0.3x against 0.5x for the industry and a P/B of 1.4x as the only multiples standing. Cheap on sales, loss-making on profit, is how a formula reads it. The quarter to December 2025 leaves the trailing window only after results on 9 February 2027.

Street vs model: the lowest target on Wall Street is $14, 63% above $8.58

Consensus is hold: 18 buy, 23 hold, 6 sell. Targets run from $14.00 to $17.50 with a median of $15.50 - 25.6% above the price and 80.7% above the FPI fair value. Even the most cautious target, RBC Capital's $14.00 on 29 October 2026, sits 63% above the model.

The direction is down. Jefferies set $17.50 on 26 July 2026 with the stock at $14.35; since then: Industrial Alliance $14 on 6 October, Deutsche Bank $15 on 9 October, Truist $16 on 12 October, RBC $14 on 29 October. The four targets of the last month average $14.75, below the $15.56 mean of the full set.

The gap comes down to which earnings number each side prices. The Street works from adjusted EBIT of $10.5-11 billion and adjusted EPS of about $1.96 for 2026 if the December quarter meets the $0.39 estimate - about 6.3x earnings at $12.34, with a 4.86% dividend on top. The model works from GAAP profit, negative over twelve months, and a 1.0% return on capital. Executive Chair William Clay Ford Jr sided with the Street, buying 140,000 shares at $13.82 on 19 February 2026.

What moves Ford off $12: a $10.5 billion floor for 2027, or a $2 billion hole

The up case needs the flat year to hold: adjusted EBIT at or above $10.5 billion in 2027 despite the $2 billion headwind, Model e losses under $4 billion, Ford Pro margins recovering from 9.4% toward the 11.4% of the quarter to September 2025, and the $1.3 billion tariff refund booked in the quarter to March 2026 arriving as cash in 2027. Four profitable quarters in a row would also give the peer comparison a P/E to work with.

The down case: commodity costs for 2026 have already climbed to nearly $2.5 billion, $500 million more than planned in April. The guidance assumes a U.S. market of 16.5 million vehicles a year; a weaker market, memory-chip inflation above the $2 billion assumption or a Fathom launch slipping past late 2027 would turn a flat year into a down year with no EV offset until 2028.

Three signals to watch:

  • 9 February 2027: fourth-quarter results. Estimates are $0.39 of EPS on $49.30 billion of revenue; an adjusted EBIT margin below 5.4% would put the $10.5 billion floor for 2027 in doubt.
  • $13.35 and $12.93: the 200-day and 50-day averages. The stock sits below both since the slide from $17.78 on 29 May 2026; the 52-week low is $11.11.
  • $8.58 versus $14.00: the model and the lowest Street target. Whichever moves first toward the other shows whether the 2025 loss or the 2026 cash is winning the argument.

HIGHEST WALL STREET TARGET

  • 01Jefferies set the $17.50 high target on 26 July 2026, which needs 2027 adjusted EBIT to hold at or above the raised $10.5 billion floor.
  • 02Ford beat EPS estimates in 7 of the last 8 quarters, most recently $0.49 against $0.41 on 28 October 2026, and generated $4.7 billion of free cash flow in the September quarter.
  • 03Four straight profitable quarters would restore a P/E to the peer screen and let a 0.3x P/S against the industry 0.5x and a 4.86% dividend yield do the work.
BEAR CASE$5.58−55%

BOTTOM OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND

  • 01The quarter to December 2025 carried about $11.1 billion of loss and stays in the trailing window until results on 9 February 2027, holding net margin at -3.9%.
  • 02Management guided 2027 profit roughly flat with 2026 against about $2 billion of commodity, memory-chip and logistics headwinds, with no EV profit step-up until 2028.
  • 03The stock sits below both its $12.93 50-day and $13.35 200-day averages after sliding from $17.78 on 29 May 2026, with a 52-week low of $11.11.

FPI FAIR VALUE $8.58 · FPI fair value of $8.58 sits far nearer the $5.58 bear anchor than the $17.50 bull anchor, because the model reads GAAP results that still include the roughly $11.1 billion loss of the December 2025 quarter.
