THE REPORT IN 3 POINTS
- 01GM's 37.8x trailing P/E reflects $3.36bn of 2026 EV write-offs; on guided adjusted EPS of $12-14 it is 5.9-6.9x.
- 02The stock sits at $82.74 on 20 October 2026, up 1.8% in 2026 versus 12.3% for the S&P 500.
- 03FPI fair value is $109.01, 31.8% above the price, while recent analyst targets slid from $98.07 to $94.17.
$1.41 or $3.57 a share: the $2.28 billion write-off that makes GM look 38x expensive
General Motors ($GM) walked into its 20 October 2026 report with two sets of earnings. In the quarter to June 2026 it reported GAAP earnings of $1.41 a share and adjusted earnings of $3.57 - the difference is a $2.279 billion charge for scaling back its electric-vehicle plans ($3.356 billion across the first half of 2026). Revenue was $48.03 billion (+1.9%), EBIT-adjusted (operating profit before one-offs, interest and tax) $3.94 billion (+29.8%) and net income $1.31 billion (-31.1%). The business improved; the accounts went backwards.
That gap explains the oddest number in the FPI data: a trailing P/E of 37.8x, nearly three times the auto industry median of 13.2x. It counts the $3.3 billion net loss of the quarter to December 2025 and the 2026 write-offs as normal earnings. On the $12.00-14.00 of adjusted EPS guided on 21 July 2026, the same $82.74 share price is 5.9-6.9x - a multiple paid for a business expected to shrink.
The bar for the quarter to September 2026 was set by LSEG consensus at $3.63 of adjusted EPS and $48.70 billion of revenue, against $2.80 and $48.59 billion in the quarter to September 2025. Three lines matter more than the headline: any further EV charge, the North America margin against 8.6% in the quarter to June, and whether guidance moved a third time.

General Motors beat the EPS estimate in 8 of the last 8 quarters. Price reaction is the move on the trading day after the results.
Flat at $82 since December 2025 while the S&P 500 gained 12%
Twelve straight EPS beats have bought nothing in 2026: the stock closed 2025 at $81.32 and trades at $82.74 on 20 October 2026, a gain of 1.8% while the S&P 500 added 12.3%. Beats of 41.8% and 11.9% in April and July 2026 moved the stock +1.3% and +4.9% the next day; the +14.9% jump of 21 October 2025 remains the last real repricing.
The market is watching volume. US deliveries fell 5.5% to 670,974 in the quarter to September 2026, from 710,347 a year earlier - a sign that 2026 profit rests on price and mix, not on more cars sold. Bloomberg reported on 21 July 2026 that the $500 million guidance raise came from premium pricing on full-size trucks and lower tariff costs - tailwinds that fade faster than volume recovers.
Insiders have read the same chart. In the 12 months to October 2026 there were 30 sales worth $127.1 million and no purchases, including 108,382 shares sold by the chair and CEO at $90.38 on 28 July 2026 ($9.8 million). Over the same period the company bought back $6.04 billion of stock, 8.3% of its market value.
Why the model lands at $109: a 22.7% cash yield against a 1.0% net margin
The FPI fair value is $109.01, 31.8% above the price. Half the model is a discounted cash flow, and in cash GM looks nothing like its P/E. The FPI data show a free cash flow yield of 22.73% and a price of 4.4 times free cash flow; even the narrower adjusted automotive free cash flow guidance of $9.5-11.5 billion equals 13-16% of the $72.6 billion market cap. Free cash flow is the money left after factories and tooling are paid for; a company generating a fifth of its value in cash each year lifts a DCF, however ugly the accounting profit.
The profitability ratios pull the other way. Net margin of 1.0%, ROIC of 0.8% and ROE of 3.0% sit under the industry medians of 2.8%, 2.5% and 6.6%, all depressed by the same write-offs. The peer leg of the model is harder on GM: EV/EBITDA (enterprise value against operating cash profit) of 13.6x against a 9.2x industry median, and only price-to-sales (0.4x versus 0.5x) screens cheap. One caveat: a DCF on a car maker is only as good as the assumption that 2026 cash flow is not the top of the cycle, the classic trap with cyclical stocks.
Over the 120 days to October 20, 2026 the share price went from $80.44 to $82.74 (+2.9%) and the FPI fair value from $103.48 to $109.01 (+5.3%). The gap moved from 28.6% below fair value to 31.8% below.
Street vs model: median $101.50, model $109.01, and targets sliding from $98 to $94
Wall Street rates GM a buy: 2 strong buy, 32 buy, 13 hold, 4 sell. Targets run from $61 to $130 with a median of $101.50 and a mean of $102.17, so the model sits 7.4% above the median and 6.7% above the mean. Both see over 20% upside from $82.74; they differ on how much of 2026 survives into 2027.
The direction of travel is down. The 14 targets of the last quarter averaged $98.07; the six of the last month averaged $94.17. RBC Capital set $102 on 12 October 2026, Deutsche Bank $101 on 9 October, Truist $105 and UBS $112 on 7 October; UBS had cut its rating to Neutral on 21 September. JPMorgan's note of 11 October 2026 framed the quarter around 2027 estimate revisions rather than the print itself. The gap has a simple source: analysts are trimming 2027, while the model's cash-flow and consensus legs still run off 2026's $9.5-11.5 billion.
34 buy · 13 hold · 4 sell. FPI fair value sits inside the Street range, the share price is inside the range.
Three numbers to watch: $80.69, an 8% North America margin and the January 2027 guide
Up-scenario: 2027 guidance in January 2027 that holds EBIT-adjusted at or above the $14 billion floor of the 2026 range with the EV charges gone; the GAAP P/E would collapse toward the 6-7x adjusted multiple and the stock could close part of the 31.8% gap to $109.01. Down-scenario: a second straight quarter of falling US deliveries alongside a North America margin below 8% (8.6% in the quarter to June 2026) would confirm 2026 as the peak and justify the Street's drift to $94.
Signals:
- The price against the 200-day average of $80.69 and the 50-day of $84.25; the stock sits between the two, and a close below $80.69 would be the first break of the 2026 range.
- Adjusted automotive free cash flow against the $9.5-11.5 billion range: $6.30 billion was banked by 30 June 2026, so the second half needs $3.2-5.2 billion.
- The EV realignment line in the Q3 and Q4 2026 reconciliations: $3.02 of adjustments is already built into the GAAP EPS guidance of $8.98-10.98, and anything beyond it pushes the trailing P/E higher still.
- The buyback pace against the $6.0 billion authorisation of 27 January 2026: with the dividend yielding 0.83% against an industry 2.49%, the cash return sits almost entirely in the shrinking share count.
TOP OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND
- 01Adjusted EPS guidance of $12.00-14.00 set on 21 July 2026 puts the stock at 5.9-6.9x earnings, a multiple that re-rates fast once EV charges stop.
- 02A free cash flow yield of 22.73% and a price of 4.4 times free cash flow carry the DCF leg that lifts the model above the $101.50 Street median.
- 03January 2027 guidance holding EBIT-adjusted at or above the $14 billion floor with EV charges gone would close most of the 31.8% gap to fair value.
LOWEST WALL STREET TARGET
- 01US deliveries fell 5.5% to 670,974 in the quarter to September 2026, so 2026 profit rests on price and mix rather than more cars sold.
- 02Write-offs of $3.356 billion in the first half of 2026 leave net margin at 1.0% and ROIC at 0.8%, both under industry medians of 2.8% and 2.5%.
- 03Targets are sliding: the six issued in the last month average $94.17 against $98.07 over the quarter, and UBS cut GM to Neutral on 21 September 2026.
FPI FAIR VALUE $109.01 · FPI fair value of $109.01 sits far closer to the $130.81 bull anchor than to the $61.00 low target, decided by a 22.73% free cash flow yield that no 37.8x GAAP P/E can offset.
