THE REPORT IN 3 POINTS
- 01FPI's fair value is $57.57, 29.1% above the $44.61 price and 10.7% above Wall Street's highest target of $52.
- 02SpaceX's $8 billion spectrum deal on 9 October 2026 and cell-site talks drove Verizon down 5.1% in a month.
- 03Verizon made $10.2 billion of free cash flow in the first half of 2026 and pays a 6.22% dividend yield.
The quarter to September 2026 had to clear $1.28 a share and 3% service growth
Verizon ($VZ) walked into its 26 October 2026 release with the highest bar it has set itself in years. On 24 July 2026 it raised 2026 guidance for the second quarter running: adjusted EPS of $4.99-5.04, free cash flow growth of 9-10%, postpaid phone net adds in the upper half of 750,000-1.0 million, and mobility and broadband service revenue growth approaching 3.0% in the quarter to September, up from 2.8% in the quarter to June. Analysts had pencilled in $1.28 of EPS on $34.77 billion of revenue.
Five straight quarters have beaten on EPS, by 1.6% to 5.8%, while three of the five missed on revenue. Behind it: a record adjusted EBITDA margin of 40.1% in the quarter to June 2026, up from 37.1%, on revenue that fell 0.7%.
The yardstick arrived five days early. AT&T reported on 21 October 2026 379,000 postpaid phone net adds, churn of 0.92% and adjusted EPS up 20.4%. Verizon's 184,000 net adds in the quarter to June look modest beside that.

Verizon beat the EPS estimate in 7 of the last 8 quarters. Price reaction is the move on the trading day after the results.
Two October days erased what five beats earned: the $8 billion discount
The results are not what moved the stock in October. On 9 October 2026 SpaceX agreed to buy Grain Management's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum for about $8 billion, pending FCC approval, and Verizon dropped roughly 6% in a day. On 22 October Bloomberg reported SpaceX is in talks for access to at least 80,000 US cell sites; on 23 October Verizon fell 3.25% to $43.73 in premarket trading before closing at $44.66.
One month: -5.1% for Verizon against -1.5% for the S&P 500. The stock sits 4.5% under its 200-day average of $46.72 and 6.2% under the 50-day at $47.54.
Scale the threat. The US had about 254,850 macrocell sites at the end of 2025; SpaceX is negotiating for roughly a third of them before it owns the spectrum, holds an FCC licence to use it, or bills a single phone customer. Verizon, meanwhile, produced $10.2 billion of free cash flow in the first half of 2026, up 16.0%, and cut net unsecured debt to $128.7 billion from $130.1 billion in three months. The market has priced a competitor's intention against a cash machine's results.
Why the model stops at $57.57: an 11.41% cash yield priced like a 7.8x EBITDA utility
The FPI fair value is $57.57, blending a discounted cash flow model (50%), peer multiples (30%) and analyst consensus (20%). At $44.61 the stock trades 29.1% below it. The DCF half is where the gap is made: free cash flow yield - cash left after capital spending, divided by market value - is 11.41%, against an industry median of 9.08%. A company that hands back more than 11 cents of cash per dollar of market value every year does not need growth to justify a higher price; it only needs to keep doing it.
The peer leg points the same way. Verizon trades at 11.6x earnings against an industry median of 15.4x, with a net margin of 11.6% where peers average 9.1%.
The drags explain why the number is $57 and not $70. EV/EBITDA - equity plus debt against operating profit - is 7.8x, above the 6.5x industry median, because $128.7 billion of net debt (2.5x adjusted EBITDA) sits on top of the equity. ROIC of 5.8% trails the 6.2% median, and revenue has compounded at 0.3% a year over three years. The 29.1% gap is the margin of safety the model sees between those weaknesses and the cash.
Over the 116 days to October 26, 2026 the share price went from $44.08 to $44.61 (+1.2%) and the FPI fair value from $60.57 to $58.71 (−3.1%). The gap moved from 37.4% below fair value to 31.6% below.
Street vs model: a $47 median against $57.57, and even the top target is 10% short
Wall Street on 26 October 2026: 1 strong buy, 22 buy, 35 hold, 3 sell - consensus hold. Targets as of 13 October run from $45 to $52, median $47, mean $47.83. The eight targets of the last quarter average $48.31. The direction is down: Scotiabank moved from $52.50 on 27 July to $50 on 9 October, the day of the Grain deal; Bernstein set $45 on 13 October with the stock at $42.78; Morgan Stanley's $52 from 27 July remains the ceiling.
FPI's $57.57 sits 22.5% above the median and 10.7% above the highest target on the Street. The median implies 5.4% upside from $44.61 - a hold, as the ratings say.
The likeliest reason for the gap: analysts set 12-month targets on multiples, and a fourth carrier plus 0.3% revenue growth cap the multiple they will pay. A DCF discounts cash over a decade, and that cash is already committed: about $55 billion of dividends and buybacks pledged through 2028, equal to 29% of the $187.78 billion market cap. Insiders have not voted with the model: 16 sales worth $16.0 million in twelve months, zero purchases, including four 1,100-share sales by the head of Verizon Business between 29 September and 20 October at $42.93-46.40.
23 buy · 35 hold · 3 sell. FPI fair value sits 11% above the highest Street target, the share price is below the whole range.
Three numbers to watch: $46.72, 4.0% and 2.5x
Re-rating up requires the fundamentals to keep outrunning the headline:
- Mobility and broadband service revenue growth reaching the guided 4.0% in the quarter to December 2026, and 2026 adjusted EPS inside $4.99-5.04.
- Net unsecured debt to adjusted EBITDA dropping below 2.5x, which shrinks the EV/EBITDA drag on the peer leg.
- The price reclaiming the 200-day average at $46.72, then the 50-day at $47.54 - the first sign the SpaceX discount is unwinding.
Re-rating down has its own triggers: FCC approval of the Grain purchase, a signed lease for those 80,000 sites, full-year postpaid phone net adds below the 750,000 floor, or churn turning back up after the reduction that produced the 40.1% margin.
The dividend is the anchor under all of it. At $0.7075 a quarter ($2.83 a year, a 6.22% yield) on about 4.2 billion shares, the bill is roughly $11.9 billion a year - nearly covered by the $10.2 billion of free cash flow from the first half alone. At the 52-week low of $38.68 the yield would top 7.3%; at the fair value of $57.57 it would be 4.9%, close to the sector median of 4.68%. Between those two prices is the entire argument.
TOP OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND
- 01Verizon has beaten EPS five quarters running, by 1.6% to 5.8%, and hit a record 40.1% adjusted EBITDA margin in the quarter to June 2026.
- 02Hitting the guided 4.0% mobility and broadband service revenue growth in the quarter to December 2026 and $4.99-5.04 adjusted EPS would validate the raised plan.
LOWEST WALL STREET TARGET
- 01SpaceX agreed on 9 October 2026 to buy 800 MHz spectrum for about $8 billion and is in talks for at least 80,000 US cell sites, a credible fourth-carrier threat.
- 02Revenue has compounded at just 0.3% a year over three years and ROIC of 5.8% trails the 6.2% industry median, capping the multiple the Street will pay.
- 03Bernstein set the low target of $45.00 on 13 October 2026, and insiders sold 16 times for $16.0 million over twelve months with zero purchases.
FPI FAIR VALUE $57.57 · FPI fair value of $57.57 sits far nearer the $63.33 bull anchor than the $45.00 bear anchor, decided by the 11.41% free cash flow yield versus the 9.08% industry median.
