The $300 million ad miss that cost $17 billion

Netflix ($NFLX) reported revenue of $12.874 billion for the quarter to September 2026, up 11.8% - the slowest growth in the five quarters the company shows, after 17.2%, 17.6%, 16.2% and 13.4%. Operating margin came in at 34.6% against a forecast of 33.2%, and diluted EPS of $0.87 beat the $0.82 consensus by 6%, as the shareholder letter of 20 October 2026 shows.

The damage was in the outlook. Fourth-quarter revenue is guided to $13.44 billion against a $13.52 billion consensus, EPS to $0.67 against the $0.73 estimate, and the fourth-quarter margin to 26.0%, including about 1.2 percentage points of severance from the roughly 1,000 job cuts announced on 14 October 2026. Full-year 2026 advertising revenue was cut to about $2.7 billion from about $3 billion, which pulled the 2026 revenue forecast to $51.1 billion - 0.2% below the midpoint of the prior range.

The stock closed at $68.69 (-1.66%) and then fell about 6% in extended trading - roughly $17 billion of a $286 billion market cap, for a $300 million revision on $51.1 billion of revenue. It is the fifth straight negative reaction to a Netflix report, after -10.1%, -2.2%, -9.7% and -7.3% for the four reports from October 2025 to July 2026.

Netflix beat the EPS estimate in 7 of the last 8 quarters. Price reaction is the move on the trading day after the results.

Netflix bought 63.9 million shares at $75. Insiders sold at $75 to $77

In the quarter to September 2026 the company repurchased 63.9 million shares for $4.8 billion, its largest buyback ever, at an average of about $75 - above the $68.69 close on 20 October 2026. Nine-month repurchases reached $10.78 billion, the diluted share count fell 3.3% to 4,195 million, and $22.3 billion of authorisation remains, 7.8% of the market cap. The 2026 free cash flow forecast was trimmed to about $12.0 billion from $12.5 billion because of a real-estate transaction expected to close in the quarter to December 2026; net debt stood at $7.1 billion on 30 September 2026.

Insiders made 125 sales worth $402.5 million in the 12 months to 21 October 2026 and no purchases; the CFO sold 9,248 shares at $75.79 on 10 August 2026, and a director sold at $75.27 to $77.60 between 8 and 10 September 2026. The company judged its stock cheap at $75; the people running it sold at the same level.

Why the model says $89.93: a 28% margin priced like Disney

The FPI fair value is $89.93, and at $68.69 the stock trades 30.9% below it. Netflix traded at 53.6x earnings on 31 December 2021 and 36.9x on 31 December 2025; on 20 October 2026 it is 21.0x, below the Entertainment industry median of 23.5x. EV/EBITDA - the whole business, debt included, against operating profit before depreciation - is 9.5x against an industry median of 12.0x and Disney's 9.9x.

The fundamentals behind that multiple belong to a different league. Netflix earns a 28.2% net margin against an industry median of 3.9% and Disney's 8.7%; its return on invested capital is 24.3% against 4.6%; its 3-year revenue growth is 12.6% a year against Disney's 4.5%. Those are the inputs that lift both the peer-multiple leg and a DCF - a valuation built on the cash a company is expected to generate - when that cash is about $12 billion a year and 2026 operating income is guided to grow 20% or more.

One caveat cuts the other way. The trailing P/E of 21.0x includes the first-quarter EPS of $1.23, which carried most of the $2.95 billion of other income booked after Warner Bros. Discovery terminated the merger agreement on 27 February 2026, as the 10-Q for the quarter to March 2026 records. Without the fee, the business trades nearer 23x. The PEG ratio of 1.00x - the P/E divided by expected earnings growth - says the market pays one unit of multiple for each unit of growth, with no premium for the margin.

Over the 119 days to October 21, 2026 the share price went from $72.82 to $68.69 (−5.7%) and the FPI fair value from $99.87 to $91.57 (−8.3%). The gap moved from 37.1% below fair value to 33.3% below.

Street vs model: $88.17 against $89.93, and a $57-to-$125 argument underneath

The consensus rating is buy - 64 buy, 28 hold and 8 sell ratings on 21 October 2026 - with a median target of $85 and a mean of $88.17; the 10 targets issued in the month to 19 October 2026 average $89. The model sits just 2% above the Street, partly because consensus is 20% of the blend.

The range tells the real story. Wells Fargo cut to Underweight on 18 September 2026 with a $57 target, down from $80, lowering its multiple to 15x forward earnings from 21x. Huber Research double-downgraded to Underweight on 13 October 2026, with the target cut to $70 from $85, and KeyBanc trimmed to $85 from $92 the same day. Morgan Stanley set $80 on 8 October 2026; BMO Capital kept $125 on 16 October 2026. The bears' argument is the multiple, not the earnings: view hours grew only 2% in the first half of 2026 per the letter of 16 July 2026; the 20 October letter offered India (+24%) as the counter-example.

Three numbers before 19 January 2027 that decide whether $68 was the floor

The next report is due on 19 January 2027, with the Street at $0.73 EPS and $13.52 billion of revenue against the company's own $0.67 and $13.44 billion. A beat of its own guide, a 2027 revenue outlook in double digits and a 2027 margin above the 31.5% of 2026 would support the re-rating: the price retaking the 50-day average of $74.85, then the 200-day of $82.65, helped by the ad tier launching in 15 new countries from March 2027.

The downside has its own thresholds. View-hour growth under 2% in the second half of 2026, flat 2027 margin guidance or another ad revenue cut would validate the $57 case. The 52-week low of $65.08 was already pierced after hours on 20 October 2026; a close below it would deepen a drawdown already at 48.7% from the peak. With a beta of 1.61, the swings will be large either way.

Three signals to watch: fourth-quarter revenue versus $13.44 billion, the pace of buybacks against the $22.3 billion authorisation, and the share price relative to $65.08. The quarter to September 2026 did not change the earnings. It changed the price the market pays for them.

TOP OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND

  • 01A January 19 2027 beat of the company guide of $0.67 EPS and $13.44 billion revenue would restore credibility after five straight negative report reactions.
  • 02Netflix earns a 28.2% net margin and 24.3% ROIC yet trades at 21.0x earnings, below the Entertainment median of 23.5x, leaving room for a re-rating toward BMO Capital's $125 target.
  • 03With $22.3 billion of buyback authorisation left, equal to 7.8% of the market cap, continued repurchases after the 63.9 million shares bought at about $75 would shrink the float further.
BEAR CASE$44.97−35%

BOTTOM OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND

  • 01View hours grew only 2% in the first half of 2026, and a second-half reading under that would validate the Wells Fargo $57 target set on September 18 2026.
  • 02Revenue growth of 11.8% in the quarter to September 2026 was the slowest of five quarters, down from 17.6%, and fourth-quarter margin guidance is 26.0%.
  • 03Insiders sold 125 times for $402.5 million in the 12 months to October 21 2026 with no purchases, including the CFO at $75.79 on August 10 2026.

FPI FAIR VALUE $89.93 · FPI fair value of $89.93 sits closer to the $134.90 bull anchor than to the $44.97 bear anchor, decided by a 28.2% net margin priced at 21.0x earnings, below the 23.5x industry median.
