THE REPORT IN 3 POINTS

  • 01Pinterest's EPS rose 21% to $0.46 mainly because buybacks cut diluted shares from 694.5m to 582.7m.
  • 02Stock pay of $288.2m absorbed 96% of the $300.3m free cash flow, and GAAP net income fell 77% to $21.5m.
  • 03FPI fair value is $15.74 versus a $20.36 price and a $26.72 mean analyst target; next results 11 February 2027.

EPS rose 21%, profit rose 3%: 111 million missing shares did the work

Pinterest ($PINS) reported revenue of $1,174 million for the quarter to September 2026, up 12%. On 4 August 2026 the company had guided to $1,190-1,210 million, so it missed its own floor by $16 million. Growth had been 18% in the quarter to June 2026; it halved in three months. Europe was flat at $193 million with revenue per user down 7% to $1.21, while the US and Canada still grew 14%.

Under the headline, the mix got worse. Ad impressions grew 17%, but ad pricing fell 4% - Pinterest is showing more ads and getting paid less per ad. GAAP net income fell 77% to $21.5 million, a 2% margin. Non-GAAP net income rose only 3% to $270.3 million.

Yet non-GAAP EPS came in at $0.46, up 21% from $0.38. The arithmetic is simple: diluted shares fell from 694.5 million to 582.7 million. On the old share count, the same profit would have been $0.39 a share. In the first nine months of 2026 Pinterest spent $2.02 billion retiring 111 million shares: 27.7 million at $17.09, 29.0 million at $19.03 and 54.8 million at $18.25 through an accelerated repurchase. Half of that money was borrowed - a $1 billion convertible issued to Elliott on 5 March 2026 at 1.75% interest, convertible at about $22.72. For the quarter to December 2026 the company guides to $1,425-1,475 million, or 8-12% growth.

$300 million of cash in, $288 million of stock out: why the model stops at $15.74

The FPI fair value is $15.74, so at $20.36 the stock trades 22.7% above it. The reason sits in one pair of numbers. Free cash flow in the quarter was $300.3 million, down 6%. Share-based compensation was $288.2 million, up 23%. Almost every dollar of cash the business generated was matched by a dollar of stock handed to staff. Over nine months the gap is the same: $882 million of free cash flow against $848 million of stock pay, and a GAAP net loss of $98.7 million. Another $1,185 million of stock pay is already granted and will be expensed over about two years.

That is why two numbers that look contradictory describe the same company. A free cash flow yield of 15.44% - cash generated divided by market value, before stock pay - looks like a bargain against an industry median of 3.57%. A P/E of 57.2x against an industry median of 14.8x looks expensive. Both are correct; the difference is whether you count the shares issued to employees as a cost. A DCF that treats stock pay as a real expense sees a 3.8% net margin against a 15.0% industry median and a 4.0% return on invested capital against 8.1%. The peer leg sees EV/EBITDA of 41.3x against 14.2x. Those inputs do not support $20, and with analyst consensus at $26.72 carrying a 20% weight, the cash-flow and peer legs must sit below the $15.74 headline.

Over the 120 days to November 4, 2026 the share price went from $22.42 to $21.22 (−5.4%) and the FPI fair value from $26.70 to $15.74 (−41.0%). The gap moved from 19.1% below fair value to 25.8% above.

Street vs model: the lowest target on Wall Street is still 40% above the model

Consensus is buy: 27 buy, 21 hold, 1 sell. The mean target is $26.72 and the median $26.00 - 70% and 65% above the FPI fair value. Even the low target of $22.00 sits 40% above $15.74. The cuts after 29 October 2026 were real but shallow: Guggenheim, Bernstein and RBC went to $22, Cantor Fitzgerald to $23, KeyBanc to $25 from $28 on 2 November 2026, while UBS kept $32. Targets issued in the month to 4 November average $24.73, against $26.74 for the quarter.

The gap has a mechanism. The Street values Pinterest on adjusted EBITDA, which was $339 million in the quarter at a 29% margin and is guided to $538-588 million for the quarter to December 2026, with a full-year 2026 margin of about 30%. That measure adds back more than $1.1 billion a year of stock pay. A cash-flow model that deducts it arrives at a profit less than a tenth the size. The Street's own revenue estimate for the quarter to December 2026 has already slipped to $1.47 billion, the top of the guided range - the numbers behind the targets have been cut more than the targets themselves.

Three prices around $20.36: $18.25, $22.72 and the $1,425 million line

The stock sits between what the company paid for its own shares and what its biggest new creditor needs. The accelerated repurchase cost $18.25 a share; Elliott converts at $22.72, a price set at a 30% premium to the 2 March 2026 close. Above $22.72 the $1 billion of debt turns into about 44 million new shares - a ceiling on how much of any recovery goes to existing holders. Insiders are not waiting for it: founder Ben Silbermann sold 140,625 shares at $22.02-22.94 in October 2026, and over 12 months insiders made 62 sales worth $46.1 million and no purchases.

What would move the model up: revenue for the quarter to December 2026 at or above $1,475 million when results come on 11 February 2027, Europe revenue back above $193 million, ad pricing turning positive, and the remaining $1,948 million of buyback authorization funded from cash flow rather than new debt. What would move it down: revenue below $1,425 million, the EU cross-border change that cost about 3 points of growth persisting into 2027, and quarterly stock pay staying above free cash flow.

Three signals to watch: the 200-day average at $20.66, 30 cents above the current price; the fair value at $15.74, which marks where the cash flow alone would justify the price; and the ratio of share-based compensation to free cash flow in each quarterly release - at 96% in the quarter to September 2026, a buyback only stands still. Until that ratio falls, the 15% cash yield belongs to the employees and the 57x P/E belongs to the shareholders.

HIGHEST WALL STREET TARGET

  • 01Hitting or beating the top of the December 2026 quarter guide of $1,475 million in revenue on 11 February 2027 would reverse the growth slide from 18% to 12%.
  • 02A 15.44% free cash flow yield against the 3.57% industry median leaves room to fund the remaining $1,948 million buyback authorization from cash rather than debt.
  • 03UBS still carries a $32 target and the Street mean is $26.72, so a return to the 2025-12-31 price of $25.89 needs only multiple repair, not new growth.
BEAR CASE$7.87−61%

BOTTOM OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND

  • 01Share-based compensation of $288.2 million consumed 96% of the $300.3 million of quarterly free cash flow, so buybacks only offset dilution.
  • 02GAAP net income fell 77% to $21.5 million, a 2% margin, leaving a 57.2x P/E against an industry median of 14.8x.
  • 03Europe revenue was flat at $193 million with revenue per user down 7% to $1.21 and ad pricing down 4%, while insiders sold $46.1 million over 12 months with no purchases.

FPI FAIR VALUE $15.74 · FPI fair value of $15.74 sits far closer to the $7.87 bear anchor than to $34.00, because $288.2 million of stock pay absorbed 96% of the quarter's $300.3 million free cash flow.
