THE REPORT IN 3 POINTS

  • 01P&G grew organic sales 4.0% in the September 2026 quarter, its fastest in three years, but net earnings fell 1%.
  • 02FY2027 guidance of $6.89-7.11 core EPS assumes Brent at $100, while oil touched $114 on 23 October 2026.
  • 03FPI fair value is $120.40, leaving the stock 25.3% above fair value at $161.11 and trading at 23x earnings.

A 5.6% jump for a quarter in which profit fell 1%

Procter & Gamble ($PG) closed at $165.59 on 22 October 2026, up 5.5% in a day, after reporting net sales of $23.3 billion for the quarter to September 2026, up 4%. Organic sales also grew 4.0% - the fastest in three years, against a 2.2% consensus - with volume adding 2.4 points, mix 1.1 and price only 0.4. All ten categories and all six regions grew. Core EPS came in at $2.00 against a $1.88 estimate.

The profit line tells another story. Net earnings fell 1% to $4.757 billion. Gross margin dropped 1.6 percentage points to 49.8%, with commodities and product reinvestment each costing 1.4 points. Core operating margin lost 0.8 points, and core EPS stripped of currency effects was flat at $1.99.

The market re-priced the stock anyway: from $145.34, the price at which the chief financial officer sold 3,914 shares on 5 October 2026, to $165.59 on 22 October and $161.11 by 26 October. That is a 14% swing in three weeks for a stock with a beta of 0.38.

$100 oil in the guidance, $114 oil on the screen

On 29 July 2026 P&G guided fiscal 2027 (the year to June 2027) core EPS to $6.89-7.11 with a cost headwind of $1.0 billion for commodities and $150 million for interest - $0.56 per share, an 8% drag on earnings growth. On 22 October the range stayed, but the headwind became $1.4 billion for commodities, $300 million for interest, $150 million for lower non-operating income and $50 million for currency: $0.79 per share, an 11% drag. The extra $0.23 a share must be absorbed inside an unchanged range, and the $0.12 beat in the September quarter covers barely half of it.

The $1.4 billion estimate assumes Brent at $100 a barrel for the rest of the fiscal year, and management flagged materially higher cost pressure in the quarter to December 2026 and in the second half. Brent touched $114 intraday on 23 October 2026, its highest since May 2026. The top line is also guided to slow: about 3% organic growth for the first half, which after 4.0% in September leaves roughly 2% for the December quarter.

The $3.9 billion all-cash purchase of Thorne closed on 1 October 2026; debt due within one year rose from $11.3 billion on 30 June to $17.0 billion on 30 September 2026. The $15 billion cash-return plan - over $10 billion of dividends and about $5 billion of buybacks - is unchanged, so the deal is in effect paid for with borrowed money.

Why the model stops at $120.40: 17x earnings, not 23x

The FPI fair value is $120.40, which leaves the stock 25.3% above fair value at $161.11. On the $7.00 fiscal 2027 midpoint, the price is 23x earnings; the fair value is 17x. Half of the model is a discounted cash flow, which prices a company on the cash it will generate. P&G's quality is not in dispute: a net margin of 18.4% against a 9.0% industry median, a return on invested capital of 15.7% against 8.8%, and a free cash flow yield (cash generated per dollar of share price) of 4.34%.

Growth caps it. Revenue has compounded at 1.7% a year over three years, fiscal 2027 EPS growth is guided at 1.5%, and the PEG ratio - P/E divided by growth - stands at 3.12x, where 1x is usually treated as fair. A cash-flow model cannot pay 23x for earnings growing at the pace of inflation.

The peer leg (30%) pulls the same way. P&G trades at 18.4x EV/EBITDA - enterprise value over operating earnings before depreciation - against 13.3x for household-products peers. Its 22.8x P/E is the lowest point in its own 2021-2026 record (24.5x to 27.4x), so the stock is cheaper than its past but still 38% dearer than peers on cash earnings. Only the consensus leg (20%) argues for more.

Over the 116 days to October 26, 2026 the share price went from $147.65 to $165.60 (+12.2%) and the FPI fair value from $134.90 to $117.58 (−12.8%). The gap moved from 8.6% above fair value to 29.0% above.

Street vs model: 29 buys and a mean target below the price

Wall Street's consensus rating is buy - 29 buy, 23 hold, 1 sell on 26 October 2026. The mean target of $160.22 (23 October) is 0.6% below the $161.11 price; the median $163 is 1.2% above; the range runs $149 to $172. Against the FPI $120.40, the Street mean sits 33% higher.

The post-earnings moves all went up: UBS to $190 and Morgan Stanley to $185 on 23 October 2026, RBC Capital to $169, Goldman Sachs to $161 with a neutral rating on 22 October; Bank of America Securities moved to Underperform on 23 October. Seven targets issued in the last month average $171.86 against $164.30 for the quarter. Morgan Stanley's $185 rests on about 25x fiscal 2028 earnings even as it trimmed its fiscal 2027 estimate by 1% for cost pressure.

That is the gap in one sentence: the Street applies P&G's historical 24-27x multiple to fiscal 2028 earnings, a year in which the oil headwind is assumed to have faded, while a cash-flow model discounts the 1.5% growth that exists today. Insiders sit on the model's side: 32 sales worth $63.5 million in twelve months and zero purchases.

Three numbers to watch before 21 January 2027

For the stock to grow into its price, Brent needs to fall back under $100, organic growth needs to hold near 3% in the quarter to December 2026, and core gross margin needs to stay at the 50.0% it printed in September. That path takes EPS toward the $7.11 top of the range and makes the Street's 25x defensible. For a re-rating down, Brent above $110 through the winter, core gross margin under 49% and guidance trimmed toward the $6.89 floor would do it. At 23x, every $0.10 of EPS lost to oil costs about $2.30 of share price; at the model's 17x it costs $1.70.

  • 21 January 2027: the quarter to December report, with EPS estimated at $1.85 and revenue at $22.82 billion. Check core gross margin against 50.0% and whether the $1.4 billion commodity figure moves again.
  • $100 Brent: the price the guidance was built on. Each day above it eats into the cushion the September beat created.
  • Price levels: $167.25 (52-week high), $148.51 (200-day average, 8% below the price) and $120.40 (fair value). A 2.72% dividend yield is not what the market is paying 23x for.

BOTTOM OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND

  • 01The fiscal 2027 cost headwind rose from $1.0 billion to $1.4 billion on 22 October 2026, an 11% drag worth $0.79 per share.
  • 02The $1.4 billion estimate assumes Brent at $100 a barrel, yet Brent touched $114 intraday on 23 October 2026, its highest since May 2026.
  • 03Gross margin fell 1.6 points to 49.8% and net earnings slipped 1% to $4.757 billion, with revenue compounding at just 1.7% a year over three years.

FPI FAIR VALUE $120.40 · FPI fair value of $120.40 sits far below the $172.00 bull anchor and near the $108.36 bear anchor, because 1.5% guided fiscal 2027 EPS growth cannot support the 23x the stock trades at.
