COCA-COLA · KO · OCT 27, 2026 · AFTER RESULTS OF OCT 27, 2026

The last time Coca-Cola cost 28x earnings, it went nowhere for two years

Coca-Cola is up 32.6% in 2026 while its profit grows 9-10%. With Treasuries at 5%, the premium multiple is doing the heavy lifting - and the quarter to September 2026 had to justify it.

THE REPORT IN 3 POINTS

  • 01Coca-Cola trades at $92.71 and 27.9x earnings, 29.9% above the FPI fair value of $64.99
  • 02Two-thirds of the 32.6% gain in 2026 came from a higher multiple, not the 9-10% profit growth
  • 03The 10-year Treasury at 5.00% pays more than KO's 3.6% earnings yield or 2.27% dividend yield

The bar for the quarter: $0.88 a share, and 3 points of it come from the dollar

Coca-Cola ($KO) released its results for the quarter to September 2026 on 27 October 2026. The yardstick is the same quarter of 2025, when revenue was $12.46 billion, comparable EPS $0.82, organic growth (sales growth with currency and acquisitions stripped out) 6% and the operating margin 32.0%. Consensus sat at about $0.88 of comparable EPS and $12.93 billion of revenue, 3.7% more than in 2025.

That bar is lower than it looks. In the guidance of 28 July 2026 the company flagged a currency tailwind of about 3% on third-quarter comparable EPS and 1% on revenue, so the underlying business needed only about 4% growth to meet the number. Internally, the quarter to June 2026 delivered 5% volume growth with the World Cup, a 35.6% comparable operating margin and -9% price/mix (revenue per case) in Asia Pacific. All five quarters from July 2025 to July 2026 beat the EPS estimate, by 1.8% to 6.2%. Another beat extends the streak; it does not change the arithmetic below.

27.9x earnings with Treasuries at 5%: two-thirds of the 2026 rally is a higher price tag

The price went from $69.91 on 31 December 2025 to $92.71 on 26 October 2026, a gain of 32.6% against 12.1% for the S&P 500. Over the same period the trailing P/E rose from 23.0x to 27.9x, a 21% increase, and EV/EBITDA (enterprise value against operating profit before depreciation) from 18.0x to 21.7x. Profit per share grew roughly 9-10%; the rest is investors paying more for each dollar of it.

That matters because of what the alternative pays. At 27.9x, a dollar invested in the stock buys 3.6 cents of annual earnings; the dividend yield is 2.27% and the free cash flow yield 3.58%. The 10-year Treasury closed at 5.00% on 23 October 2026. A government bond now pays more than the stock's entire earnings stream - and this is a stock with a beta of 0.32 that investors hold as a bond substitute.

The FPI valuation history shows what happened the last time the multiple reached this zone. On 31 December 2022 the P/E stood at 29.0x and the price at $63.61. On 31 December 2024 the price was $62.26. Two years of profit growth were absorbed entirely by a shrinking multiple.

Why the model stops at $64.99: 19.6x earnings, exactly where the industry trades

The FPI fair value is $64.99, which puts the share price 29.9% above it. In multiple terms, $64.99 is about 19.6x trailing earnings - the same as the non-alcoholic beverage industry median of 19.6x. The model prices the best company in the industry at the industry's price.

Two mechanisms push it there. The discounted cash flow half converts future free cash flow into a present value using a discount rate anchored to the risk-free rate; with the 10-year at 5%, each future dollar is worth less than it was in 2024. The guided 2026 free cash flow of $12.4 billion is 3.1% of the $398.89 billion market cap, against a 4.50% free cash flow yield at the industry median. The peer third compares 27.9x earnings and 21.7x EV/EBITDA with an industry at 19.6x and 11.1x, and PepsiCo at 16.9x and 12.6x.

The case for a premium is real: a net margin of 28.6% against 8.1% for the industry, a return on equity of 43.0%, 12 years of dividend growth and EPS growth of 11.6%. The model grants a premium over PepsiCo's 16.9x. It does not grant 29.9% over the industry median - exactly the distance between $64.99 and $92.71.

Over the 120 days to October 27, 2026 the share price went from $82.63 to $91.19 (+10.4%) and the FPI fair value from $60.43 to $64.99 (+7.5%). The gap moved from 26.9% above fair value to 28.7% above.

Street vs model: $96.17 against $64.99 - even the lowest target is 32% above the model

Wall Street holds 29 buy, 16 hold and 3 sell ratings. Price targets run from $86 to $104 (UBS, 29 July 2026), with a median of $95.50 and a mean of $96.17. The two latest targets average $100: Piper Sandler at $102 on 26 October 2026 and Barclays at $98 on 16 October 2026. Barclays had $93 on 30 July 2026; its target rose 5.4% while the stock rose 3.3% in between.

The mean target is 3.7% above the price and 48% above the FPI fair value. The gap comes from method. Targets take 12-month forward earnings - consensus near $3.53 for 2027 - and keep a 26-28x multiple on them, which assumes the premium survives 5% bond yields. The model discounts cash flows at today's rates and benchmarks the multiple against peers, so a 9-10% profit increase lifts the fair value by 9-10%, not by 30%.

In the 12 months to 27 October 2026 insiders made zero purchases and 36 sales worth $245.8 million. The company paid $4,562 million in dividends in the first half of 2026 and spent only $663 million on buybacks - neither insiders nor the company are using cash to argue the shares are cheap.

Three numbers that settle it: $81.71, 9-10%, and a $14 billion court decision

What would lift the fair value: comparable EPS growth above 10% without currency help, volume above 3% after the World Cup quarter, or a 10-year Treasury back under 4%, which lifts any DCF. What would pull the price toward the model: the 10-year staying near 5% while revenue growth settles back to the three-year average of 3.7%, Asia Pacific price/mix staying negative, or an adverse ruling from the Eleventh Circuit, which heard the IRS appeal on 25 June 2026. Coca-Cola deposited $6.0 billion on 10 September 2024 for the years 2007-2009 and estimates a further potential liability of about $14 billion for 2010-2025 - roughly 3.5% of the market cap, against a reserve of $529 million.

Signals to watch:

  • $81.71, the 200-day average, 12% below the price, with the 50-day at $89.20.
  • 9-10% comparable EPS growth for 2026, and the first 2027 guidance in February 2027: a figure starting with a 6 or a 7 removes the growth argument for 28x earnings.
  • $12.4 billion of free cash flow for 2026 against $6.9 billion delivered by 3 July 2026: the second half has to produce $5.5 billion.
  • $64.99, the level at which the premium is gone and the stock is priced like the rest of its industry.

HIGHEST WALL STREET TARGET

  • 01UBS set the high target of $104.00 on 29 July 2026, which needs the 27.9x multiple to hold while 2027 consensus EPS near $3.53 is delivered.
  • 02Coca-Cola beat EPS estimates in all five quarters from July 2025 to July 2026, by 1.8% to 6.2%, and a 28.6% net margin against 8.1% for the industry supports a premium.
  • 03A 10-year Treasury back under 4%, versus 5.00% on 23 October 2026, would lift any DCF and restore the bond-substitute appeal of a 0.32-beta stock.
BEAR CASE$58.49−37%

BOTTOM OF THE FPI FAIR VALUE BAND

  • 01At 27.9x earnings the stock yields 3.58% of free cash flow, less than the 5.00% a 10-year Treasury paid on 23 October 2026.
  • 02The last time the multiple hit this zone, 29.0x on 31 December 2022, the price was $63.61 and still only $62.26 on 31 December 2024.
  • 03The Eleventh Circuit heard the IRS appeal on 25 June 2026, with about $14 billion of potential liability for 2010-2025 against a reserve of $529 million.

FPI FAIR VALUE $64.99 · FPI fair value of $64.99 sits far closer to the $58.49 bear anchor than to $104.00, because $64.99 is 19.6x earnings, exactly the non-alcoholic beverage industry median multiple.
