THE REPORT IN 3 POINTS

  • 01IBM trades at $252.26 versus the FPI fair value of $241.95, a 4.1% premium rated fair.
  • 02Over $250 million of software revenue came from deals that slipped out of the second quarter of 2026.
  • 03The quarter to December 2026 must deliver over $7.9 billion of free cash flow to hit the $15.7 billion guide.

A 25% crash, a 22% rebound, and $250 million of last quarter's homework

IBM ($IBM) has completed a round trip. On 14 July 2026 the company pre-announced a second-quarter revenue miss, and the stock fell 25% in a single session, its worst day on record. The drawdown bottomed at -37.5% on 22 July 2026. Between 22 July 2026 and 22 October 2026 the shares gained 22%, against 3.4% for the S&P 500, and they now sit at $252.26 - within $2 of the 200-day average of $250.67.

The quarter to September 2026 validated the bounce. Revenue came in at $17.1 billion, up 5%, against $16.82 billion expected; operating EPS of $2.95 beat the $2.85 estimate. Software grew 9% at constant currency to $7.8 billion, Transaction Processing - the mainframe software that slumped in July 2026 - rose 10%, and the software segment margin widened to 35.0% from 32.9%.

The clean headline has a footnote. On the 21 October 2026 call the CFO sized the deals that slipped out of the second quarter at about $400 million, of which roughly two-thirds - more than $250 million - closed in the quarter to September 2026, about a quarter of the 4-point acceleration in software growth. BofA Global Research made the same point on 22 October 2026 and the stock fell 6.5% in premarket trading before closing up 0.26% at $252.11. Other soft spots: GAAP EPS rose 26% largely because the tax rate dropped to 11.9% from 28.2% in the quarter to September 2025, while operating pre-tax income grew 9%. The adjusted gross margin of 58.5% slipped 0.2 percentage points, consulting margin fell to 12.2% from 12.9%, and IBM Z mainframe revenue dropped 20%.

The cash promise needs a $7.9 billion fourth quarter

IBM raised its 2026 free cash flow guidance to growth of more than $1 billion over the $14.7 billion earned in 2025 - a floor above $15.7 billion. Free cash flow in the nine months to September 2026 stands at $7.79 billion, so the quarter to December 2026 alone must deliver more than $7.9 billion, exceeding the whole of the first nine months and topping the roughly $7.5 billion of the quarter to December 2025. IBM's cash is always back-loaded, and the bar has never been this high.

The balance sheet shows where the money went. Cash fell $3.4 billion to $11.1 billion, debt rose $2.6 billion to $63.8 billion, and $11.4 billion was spent on acquisitions in 2026, almost all of it the Confluent deal that closed on 17 March 2026. Dividends absorbed $4.76 billion in the nine months to September 2026 - 61% of free cash flow - there are no buybacks, and the diluted share count crept up to 953.5 million from 948.9 million. The 6.27% free cash flow yield (cash generated per dollar of market value) is real money; a debt pile three and a half times earnings before interest and tax is the caveat attached to it.

Fair value $241.95: a 6.3% cash yield meets a 17.3x EBITDA multiple

The FPI fair value is $241.95, 4.1% below the price. The verdict reads "fair". The DCF half of the model rewards exactly what IBM printed: a 6.27% free cash flow yield, 2.5 times the IT services median of 2.52%, a 33.5% return on equity and a 58.4% gross margin. Three-year revenue growth of 3.7% and a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.89x pull the other way, because a DCF discounts future cash, and slow growth plus heavy debt means less of it reaches shareholders.

The peer leg explains the rest. At 20.8x earnings IBM is barely above the IT services median of 19.4x, while on EV/EBITDA - which counts debt as part of the price - it trades at 17.3x against an industry median of 10.9x. Accenture trades at 12.4x with a higher 7.34% cash yield. The stock has already derated: P/E fell from 26.5x on 31 December 2025 to 20.8x, and price to free cash flow from 24.3x to 15.9x. That journey took IBM from expensive to fair. The PEG of 0.28x looks like a bargain and reflects a one-year EPS jump of 84% that the tax rate flattered.

Street vs model: $260 against $241.95, and 23 holds against 24 buys

The consensus rating reads "buy", while the count is 1 strong buy, 23 buy, 23 hold and 5 sell - a coin toss. The median target is $260, 7.5% above fair value and 3.1% above the price; the mean of $267.40 sits 10.5% above the model, inside a range of $175 to $350. Targets set in the month to 22 October 2026 average $261.91, against $252.53 over the quarter to 22 October 2026: the Street moved up after the print.

The 22 October 2026 moves cluster tightly. Goldman Sachs raised to $300 from $270 (buy), JPMorgan to $269 from $250, Baird to $260 from $230 (neutral), BMO to $265 (market perform), Truist and Stifel $260, Susquehanna $256, UBS to $243 from $236 (neutral), Morgan Stanley to $240 from $238 (equal-weight). Every hold-rated bank lands between $240 and $265, bracketing the model. The gap to the median comes from banks extending the 7-8% software guide into 2027, while the DCF and peer legs anchor on 3.7% historical growth and the EBITDA premium to IT services peers.

What moves IBM off $252: a 7% software quarter, a $15.7 billion cash number, a $250.67 line

Up-case: software grows at or above 9% in the quarter to December 2026 without slipped deals, against management's roughly 7% anchor; the 27 January 2027 report shows free cash flow at or above $15.7 billion alongside estimates of $4.62 EPS and $20.41 billion revenue; the 2027 outlook starts at 5% or better. That is the story the $300 target needs.

Down-case: software below 7%, Transaction Processing fading from 10%, consulting margin under 12%, adjusted gross margin under 58%, and free cash flow short of $15.7 billion. Any one of those would put the July 2026 doubt about the software franchise's own momentum straight back on the table.

Three markers to watch:

  • $250.67, the 200-day average, and $232.71, the 50-day: the stock sits on the first and 8% above the second, with an RSI of 70 after the rebound.
  • $241.95, the fair value: a pullback there would close the gap to zero without any change in the business.
  • 27 January 2027: the free cash flow line decides whether the 6.27% cash yield was a promise kept or a fourth-quarter stretch.

HIGHEST WALL STREET TARGET

  • 01Software must grow 9% or better in the quarter to December 2026 without slipped deals, beating management's roughly 7% anchor, to justify Goldman's $300 target.
  • 02The 27 January 2027 report has to show 2026 free cash flow at or above $15.7 billion, which means a fourth quarter above $7.9 billion.
  • 03A 6.27% free cash flow yield, 2.5 times the IT services median of 2.52%, plus 33.5% ROE can carry a higher multiple if growth exceeds the 3.7% three-year rate.
BEAR CASE$175.00−31%

LOWEST WALL STREET TARGET

  • 01Roughly $250 million of deals that slipped from the second quarter closed in the quarter to September 2026, about a quarter of the 4-point software acceleration.
  • 02GAAP EPS rose 26% mainly because the tax rate fell to 11.9% from 28.2%, while operating pre-tax income grew only 9%.
  • 03Debt rose $2.6 billion to $63.8 billion at 1.89x equity, and EV/EBITDA of 17.3x sits far above the IT services median of 10.9x.

FPI FAIR VALUE $241.95 · FPI fair value of $241.95 sits in the lower third between the $175 bear anchor and the $350 bull anchor, decided by 3.7% three-year revenue growth against a 17.3x EV/EBITDA multiple.
